Choosing tiles for your home and you’re stuck on whether to go for a matt or gloss finish? Whether you need quality tiles for your splashback kitchen floor, bathroom walls or even pools, here at Myaree Ceramics we have an extensive selection of beautiful tiles from Italy and other parts of the world for you to choose from.
What are the Key Differences?
While a matt tile has a soft non-reflective surface, a gloss tile is shiny and highly reflective. Where in your house you are using the tile can determine what finish you use. You may want to consider what the space is used for, who will be using it and how it will withstand the activities you are using it for. A gloss finish can often work better in small spaces as the surface reflects light, giving the illusion of a larger area. Matt tiles on the other hand can soften a room, as they have less glare and intensity, creating a calm neutral space. You can easily combine both finishes in the same area depending on the style and feel you are going for. Our Bejmat range comes in a series of colours and finishes, and can be laid together to achieve a fun, unique look.

Aesthetic Differences
Matt Tiles
A matt finish tile in a home can achieve a range of looks, from rustic charm to sleek modern. If you’re struggling on where to begin, the Sheer Grey Matt or Sheer Grey Matt tile are both great options to build your style around as they are neutral and classic. Given the simplicity and softness of options such as these, you might want to create a contrast with rich wood tones, pops of decor and greenery.
If you’re looking for a more playful and bold matt tile, we have an array of unique patterned tiles to choose from. You could opt for the Mattonelle Margherita Corners tile for a retro styled kitchen floor or for a splashback to brighten up the room. If you’re wanting to add a unique edge to your home, a patterned tile is the way to go.
Gloss Tiles
A gloss tile can bring an incredible amount of light into your room which will bounce off the tile and make your room feel bigger than it is. We recommend our Manual Blanco Brillo Gloss tiles which will really brighten up the space. Gloss tiles can work fantastically in smaller or awkwardly shaped rooms, by creating the illusion that there is more space. Gloss tiles look beautiful in deep vibrant colours, like our La Riviera Botanica Green.
The Ideal Spaces
WHAT ARE THE IDEAL SPACES IN THE HOME FOR MATT VS GLOSS TILES?
Matt finishes can be both used for all sized spaces, but are most effective when used over large rooms. Some areas include bathrooms, bathroom floors, pool areas, and backyard patios. These areas see a lot of foot traffic and you want to make sure that when wet they provide traction and don’t become a slip hazard. Matt tiles are also ideal for holiday homes as it is easily cleaned, making it a quick-clean up job after guests leave.
Gloss finishes are often used on bathroom walls, kitchen splashbacks, living room floors and laundries. When tiling a large space such as a main floor, gloss tiles are perfect to achieve a striking lux look. On the other hand, textured gloss tiles, such as La Riviera Ginger, are most effective used in areas such as feature walls, as they add interest and movement.
Gloss tiles are also a very popular option for kitchen splashback. You want to be able to easily clean a splashback as it sees a lot of oil, dirt and grime from cooking. Gloss tiles are easily wiped down with a soft cloth and surface cleaner.
How to Style Matt VS Gloss Finish Tiles
When styling the rest of the room for a matt finish tile you want to take into consideration the colour and design that you chose first. For example, If you have chosen a neutral tile such as the Silver Grain White tile, it looks great with natural earthy toned furniture. You can create a modern look in the space with a granite sink countertop and copper toned appliances.
If you have chosen to have one type of tile for the walls and have space, choose a wall and make it a feature wall. You can choose a bold design or go with 3D matt textured tile such as Shade Bianco.
When styling a gloss finish, think about what look you are wanting to create within your home. Are you making the tile a centre piece? Are you choosing a colour that ties in with the walls of the home? Or do you want a colour that is child friendly?
If you want a feature kitchen floor or splashback, the Bejmat Square White Gloss is a great choice. Reminiscent of Moroccan interiors, these tiles add a rustic warmth to any space. Alternatively if you are wanting a matt look, the Pottery Square Natural tiles have beautiful pops of colour that can brighten up your kitchen or bathroom.
