Feature walls (or accent walls) are a guaranteed way of making a beautiful design statement in your home. You can create your feature wall in alignment with your own style and aesthetic of your space; bold, neutral, textural, the options are truly endless. This blog will go through the different parts of the home, and how you can incorporate a tiled feature wall for each. So if you're looking for design or renovation inspiration, you've come to the right place!
There are many different ways you can make a design statement in your bathroom using tile, including -but not limited to- floor to ceiling feature walls, shower nooks, feature flooring, vanity walls, and entire shower spaces. Gone are the days where your only option for bathrooms are stark white walls, with many people making bold design choices in their bathrooms using brighter colours, patterns and interesting textures.
One of our favourite projects we completed for an ensuite in Fremantle opted for a floor-to-ceiling bathroom feature wall on the centre panel of their shower, carried through the bathroom floor up to the vanity. The rest of the bathroom was neutral - using Picasso Plain Black and Clay41 White tiles to create a sleek modern look. For their feature tiling, our client opted for the blush pink Medley Classic Pink terrazzo tile (order in only). With black and white sprinkled in the terrazzo's aggregate, it picks up on the rest of the bathroom's monochromatic colour scheme. This ensuite is a fresh take on the classic all-black and white modern bathroom, with the pink terrazzo breaking up the monochrome and adding visual impact. With a resurgence in the popularity of terrazzo tiles, this bathroom is modern, stylish, and taps into current trends.
If you want feature wall ideas for your kitchen, a great place to start is a tiled feature splashback. With endless options to choose from for this area, it’s one of the most popular tiled features in a home and you can really get creative with different colours and styles. You can opt to tile your whole splashback in a feature tile, or alternatively break it up with a mix of neutral tones and feature tiles, such as the kitchen below.
A feature splashback is also a great way to break up the often-solid colours of benchtops and cabinetry. Charismatic solid colours such as forest green, navy blue and burgundy, are all popular colour choices in modern kitchen cabinetry, and a feature splashback is a great way to break up the strong tones. If you have a neutral kitchen with a brighter feature splashback, you can match up your kitchen appliances and accessories to match your tiles.
Many people don't consider the bedroom as a space to tile, but you absolutely can. A unique option nowadays is to create a custom tile headboard. You may have not been able to find your perfect headboard already on the market — so creating your own using tile really opens up your design options. You can match your tile headboard to your bedroom furnishings, or use the same tile which has been used in other rooms of your home for continuity.
So if you are brainstorming bedroom feature wall ideas, and are wanting something more unique, a tiled headboard might be a great option to consider. It serves as an interesting focal point for your bedroom, and with tile, you have the ability to customise it in alignment with your design preferences.
A great way to bring the outdoors in- tiling your outdoor space is a great way to curate an area which is perfect for entertaining or relaxing. You can opt for a outdoor feature wall, feature flooring, or continue your feature flooring up the wall for an all-tiled space.
Popular choices are brightly coloured patterned tiles, such as the Mattonelle Margherita collection. These eye-catching geometric tiles really help to create that holiday feel, and provide that modern edge to what would have previously been a blank wall. Outdoor feature walls look fantastic in either large or small spaces, and can be combined with outdoor elements such as plants, water features, and outdoor furniture can help create the perfect outdoor oasis (perfect for the upcoming summer season if we must say!). Get inspired by checking out this residence in Italy by Farina Studio which uses the Mattonelle Margherita tiles both in the interior and outdoors, creating a stunning Mediterranean look.
