Confidence in Business Beyond Design

I recently had the privilege of being part of Confidence in Business Beyond Design, a sold-out event that brought together a diverse panel of business owners to share the experiences, challenges and lessons that have shaped our professional journeys. Designed to explore the business side of creative industries, the event encouraged open conversations around leadership, growth, confidence and the realities of running a business. Moderated by Kim Robertson of La Vie Interiors, the panel featured Kelly Donougher of 13 Interiors, Gino Premici from Montauk Lighting Co., Lauren Stephenson of Neo Interiors, and myself, representing Myaree Ceramics. Together, we shared insights from our own business journeys and contributed to a thoughtful discussion for Perth's design and business community.

Bringing together designers, creatives and business professionals from across Perth, the conversation explored the realities of running a business beyond the creative aspects of our work. Through candid discussions and shared experiences, we reflected on the challenges, opportunities and lessons that come with building and sustaining a successful business.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

Several themes emerged throughout the discussion that I believe are valuable for business owners and professionals at every stage of their journey.

One of the strongest messages was the importance of taking action rather than waiting for perfection. Growth often comes from starting before all the answers are known, then learning, refining and adapting along the way. We also discussed the role personal values play in shaping a business, and how authenticity and consistency help build trust and lasting relationships.

Another key theme was the importance of understanding what makes your business unique and having the confidence to focus on your strengths rather than trying to be everything to everyone. Being clear about who you are, what you offer and the value you bring creates confidence, both within your business and for your clients.

We also spoke about the importance of leading clients with calm, clarity and confidence. Whether working in design, retail or professional services, clients look to us for guidance and expertise, particularly when navigating complex decisions.

One of my favourite takeaways from the discussion was the reminder that, regardless of our role, we are all in sales. Building relationships, communicating value and creating trust are essential skills across every aspect of business.

I'd like to thank Lisa Sinagra, The Perth Design Community and Kim Robertson for creating and facilitating such a thoughtful and engaging event, and for fostering conversations that strengthen and support Perth's design and business community. It was a privilege to be part of the panel and connect with so many inspiring professionals.
