With all the home renovation shows on TV, you may be feeling inspired to overhaul or revamp your own home or backyard. The thought of a complete change might be overwhelming and costly, but at Myaree Ceramics, we suggest starting with your flooring. Outdoor tiles are an easy way to change the ambience of your outdoor space. You can upgrade your patio or the tiles around your pool, create a walkway through your garden or even update your driveway. With so many different options to choose from, tiles are a great way to create a stunning outdoor area that will increase the value of your property. So what should you look for in a tile?
While you are snuggled up inside during the rain or enjoying the air conditioning during a heatwave, your tiles are exposed to all of the elements. When choosing your outdoor tiles, you need to ensure that the tiles you choose will be able to withstand the elements. An important feature to look at for outdoor tiles is the water absorption rate; even if you won’t be tiling near a pool, you should choose a tile with a low water-absorption rate.
Tile Slip Rating
Sleek, glazed tiles might be the right tile for the inside of your home, but tiles that turn into a slip and slide with a few drops of water aren’t the best choice for your outdoor area! While no tiles are entirely slip proof, you can choose tiles with a slip rating of R10 and above, which should help to minimise the rise of slips and falls. In outdoor areas, Myaree Ceramics recommend unglazed or rough tiles, as these will provide some additional grip underfoot if there is water.
As outdoor tiles are mostly unglazed, it is important that they are properly sealed to repel water, oil and salt based stains and keep your tile looking brand new for years to come. Some tiles are inherently quite stain proof, such as porcelain, slate and granite, however you should still invest in a good sealant to ensure they withstand the elements.
Synchronise With Your Home
Your outdoor area should be a stylish continuation of the aesthetics within your home; you can achieve this by opting for tiles in a similar style and colour scheme. While a pop of colour or a feature tile can certainly be incorporated into your outdoor tiles, it should not take away from the style that has been carefully used throughout your home. If you aren’t quite sure whether a tile will work well with the other tiles in your home, you can discuss your choices with one of the specialists at Myaree Ceramics.
